Dissolution of Marriage (Divorce)

In Missouri, an action for a divorce is called a dissolution of marriage. It begins with the filing of a petition in the Circuit Clerk

The person filing the petition is the "Petitioner". The person upon whom the petition is served is the "Respondent". Both of them are called "Parties". An action for a dissolution of marriage is a law suit. The parties can settle all of the issues between themselves and obtain a "Decree of Dissolution" without going to court under Jefferson County procedure or the parties can let the Court decide all the issues between them.

Under Missouri law, the Court must divide all of the parties
